Classic Multi-Pitch Climbing on Mount Komochi – Shishiiwa (5.8)
Mount Komochi “Shishiiwa” is an eye-catching and iconic rock peak visible from the Kan-Etsu Expressway in the suburbs of Shibukawa City, Gunma Prefecture. We enjoyed multi-pitch climbing on this grand rock face with an outstanding location.
October to November is the best season, making it a highly recommended multi-pitch route for a day trip from the Kanto region.
Highlights of Climbing the Shishiiwa Front Wall
■ Pitches 1–2 (Lower Face) After completing the approach, we headed onto the lower face. Precise footwork on small stances and good balance are required. Starting Pitch 1: The rock quality is relatively solid, but we carefully gained height while keeping an eye out for fallen leaves and loose rock. Latter half of Pitch 2: Primarily face climbing, this is an enjoyable section where you search for subtle holds as you ascend.
■ Pitch 3 (From the Ledge to the Middle Section) Moving from the broad ledge into the middle section. The exposure increases significantly, offering an invigorating climb. Following Pitch 3: The forest below covered in autumn foliage was stunning.
■ Crux (Pitch 4) Heading into the crux of the Front Wall. Reminiscent of the “nose” of Shishiiwa, this pitch offers the greatest exposure on the route. Crux Face: Although highly exposed, holds are plentiful. Confidently commit to your feet and push for the summit of Shishiiwa.
A Great Step-Up for Those Aiming for Classic Canadian Peaks
This route is also highly recommended for anyone planning to take on mountaineering or rock climbing in Canada in the future.
Especially when aiming for famous international peaks like Mount Assiniboine (3,618m) or Mount Sir Donald (3,272m),mastering multi-pitch systems and efficient climbing techniques directly impacts safety and reliability during the ascent.
Gaining practical experience on quality routes in Japan will build solid confidence and elevate your skill set.
