【Trip Report】Autumn Mount Chokai: Peak Bagging Among Clouds and Volcanic Rocks

Here is a trip report from our autumn ascent of Mount Chokai (2,236m), one of the most iconic peaks in the Tohoku region.

Also known as “Dewa Fuji” for its majestic volcano-shaped profile, Mount Chokai faces the Sea of Japan and offers spectacular panoramas of sea-of-clouds and vast autumn grasslands. Starting under dense morning fog at the trailhead, the weather cleared as we gained elevation, rewarding us with an unforgettable day traversing Shinzan and Shichiko-san.

■ Highlights of Mount Chokai

  • Dramatic Scenery: Looking down from the outer crater rim into the volcanic amphitheater and over an endless sea of clouds.
  • Varied Terrain: A rich transition from quiet forest trails and shrine torii gates to expansive, open ridge walks.
  • Hands-on Rock Scrambling: Exciting scrambling over massive, boulder-strewn lava fields near the summit and passing through the natural rock arch (“Tainai-kuguri”).

■ Route & Trip Highlights

1. Starting Through Morning Mist

We began our ascent at the trailhead enveloped in a thick autumn fog. After reviewing our route and safety precautions (including bear awareness) at the trail board, we stepped through the wooden torii gate into the quiet, atmospheric trail.

2. Emerging Above the Clouds onto Blue-Sky Ridges

As we gained elevation, the fog suddenly dissipated, revealing brilliant blue skies above. Walking along the golden autumn ridge with endless views in all directions, we made our way toward the rocky summit massif.

3. Scrambling Through the Summit Lava Boulders

Passing the Omuro mountain hut, the terrain transitioned into a rugged field of giant volcanic boulders. Applying careful three-point contact and precise footwork, we navigated the technical rock sections and squeezed through the famous rock passages.

4. Summiting Shinzan (2,236m) & Traversing Shichiko-san

Clearing the final rock scramble, we reached the highest peak, Shinzan (2,236m)! Standing at the top offered a stunning 360-degree panorama above a sea of clouds. We then traversed along the crater rim to Shichiko-san, taking in the full grandeur of Mount Chokai in autumn.

■ Route & Trip Data

  • Area: Tohoku Region (Yamagata & Akita Prefectures, Japan)
  • Target Peaks: Mount Chokai (Shinzan 2,236m / Shichiko-san)
  • Route Overview: Trailhead → Torii Gate / Shrine Trail → Ridge Line → Omuro Hut → Mt. Shinzan → Mt. Shichiko-san → Descent
  • Technical Grade / Fitness Level: Intermediate / ★★★★☆ (Requires confident footwork and basic scrambling techniques on loose/blocky terrain)

■ Guide’s Comments

Mount Chokai in autumn offers dramatic atmospheric shifts. Starting in low fog and breaking through into clear blue skies above the cloud layer made for a breathtaking experience.

While the boulder field near the summit requires careful footwork and three-point contact, the reward at the top—a 360-degree view above the clouds—is second to none. It is a highly recommended mountain for anyone looking to enjoy technical ridge scrambling and magnificent mountain vistas in Japan.
